Acupuncture is offered as part of a comprehensive naturopathic medicine approach to your health.
Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine that has been practiced for centuries. The general theory behind acupuncture is that our energy (chi/qi) flows along pathways or what many refer to as meridians. Disruptions in this flow are said to cause pain, illness, etc. By using tiny silver needles at identifiable points close to the skin, acupuncture has been shown to help bring the flow back into balance. Acupuncture has become a great alternative in healthcare, but is also supportive in nature to modern medical health management and is an effective treatment for various health conditions.
For your treatment, your doctor will look for the places (called points) on your body to access the Chi/Qi that is blocked or not flowing smoothly. Each of these points would relate to your health concerns or body functions. Once your doctor finds the affected points, they will quickly tap very thin needles into your skin. Some may be placed deeper than others, depending on what your doctor feels is needed to restore your natural flow of Chi/Qi.
Every doctor will be different in the techniques they use and the style in which they apply them. You may have several visits to complete your acupuncture treatment which is part of your naturopathic medicine comprehensive approach to care. Some people have ongoing visits for more serious conditions and/or because they are using acupuncture as a preventative tool.
Naturopathic doctors may choose to combine a variety of therapies when developing your personalized treatment plan.
